Closing the frontier gap: why specialists beat generalists
The distance between what AI can do and what most enterprises have deployed is widening every quarter. Generalist firms are not built to close it.
The gap is widening
Frontier capability now moves on a quarterly cadence. Most enterprises plan on an annual one. That mismatch is the frontier gap, and it compounds: every quarter spent catching up is a quarter the frontier moves again.
Generalist firms staff this work the way they staff everything else, with pyramids of generalists learning on the engagement. In a fast-moving domain, learning on the client's time is the most expensive option.
What specialists do differently
A specialist firm carries a curated bench of senior practitioners who have already operated AI in the enterprise, in the specific vertical. They start at the answer, not the orientation.
Depth also changes the commercial model. When you have done the work before, you can align fees to outcomes rather than to hours, because the outcomes are achievable.
What it means for buyers
Ask who, specifically, will do the work, and what they have shipped before. Ask how the firm keeps pace as the frontier moves. And ask whether they will put fees at risk against the outcome. The answers separate specialists from generalists quickly.
